Kochi Castle was built by Yamanouchi Kazutoyo in 1603. Fifteen buildings in the precincts have been registered as National Important Cultural Properties including the donjon, Kaitokukan (main building), Higashitamon, Ruokamon gate, and Otemon gate. The symbol of the castle is the three-layer/six-story, 18.5 meters donjon (castle tower). From the donjon you can enjoy the 360 degree view of Kochi City. The donjon was once destroyed by fire in 1727, but in 1749 it was rebuilt. It’s one of the few, oldest castles in Japan. You can enjoy the garden by season - cherry blossoms, Japanese apricots, and azeleas in spring, hydrangeas in summer, red and yellow leaves in fall, and camellias in winter. At dusk, the castle is beautifully colored by the setting sun.
