What kind of place is Kawagoe? Why is it suitable for a day trip from the Tokyo suburbs?

Walking along the streets of Kawagoe, you can see the heavy black storehouses, retro clock towers, old sweet shops, and many snacks that you can eat while walking. The attractions here are not too far apart, making it suitable for a leisurely stroll.
For those visiting Japan for the first time on a free trip, Kawagoe does not require a long car ride or a particularly complicated itinerary; just half a day to a day is enough to experience a completely different street atmosphere from Tokyo.
If you enjoy old streets, shrines, Japanese sweets, walking in a yukata, or are looking for a stress-free day trip near Tokyo, Kawagoe would be a very comfortable choice.
Transportation from Tokyo to Kawagoe | Take the Tobu Tojo Line from Ikebukuro, or take the Seibu Line towards Shinjuku.

If your accommodation is in the Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, or Shibuya area, the easiest way is to first go to Ikebukuro Station and then take the Tobu Tojo Line to Kawagoe. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Kawagoe Station by taking the Tobu Tojo Line express or Kawagoe limited express, and there is no need to transfer, making it easy for first-time visitors to Japan.
The recommended route is as follows:
Take the Tobu Tojo Line from Ikebukuro Station → Get off at Kawagoe Station or Kawagoe City Station.

Another route is as follows:
Take the Seibu Shinjuku Line from Seibu Shinjuku Station / Takadanobaba Station → Get off at Honkawagoe Station.
In simple terms, if you are departing from Ikebukuro, the easiest way is to take the Tobu Tojo Line to Kawagoe Station; if you are departing from Shinjuku or Takadanobaba, taking the Seibu Shinjuku Line to Honkawagoe Station is also convenient.
Kawagoe Attractions 1 | Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine: Enmusubi Shrine, Tai mikuji, and Natsu no Furin Maturi

This shrine is known for praying for romantic relationships and good connections. Not only couples come here, but many people who wish for good interpersonal relationships, work connections, and family ties also come to worship. The atmosphere within the shrine is very serene, quite different from the bustling feel of the main old street, and stepping inside gives a sense of tranquility.

In Japanese, tai fish has a meaning of good fortune, so this omikuji is not only cute in appearance but also carries a sense of blessing. For those who love to collect shrine souvenirs, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine will truly make you linger for a long time.

If you visit Kawagoe in the summer, you cannot miss the "Enmusubi Furin" at the Hikawa Shrine. Every summer, a large number of wind chimes are hung in the shrine grounds, and when the wind blows, you can hear their crisp sounds. Combined with the shrine's wooden architecture and greenery, the whole scene is very seasonal.
Furin Matsuri period is also a very popular photo season in Kawagoe. During the day, you can capture the refreshing summer vibe, and in the evening, the light becomes softer, creating another kind of romantic atmosphere. If your free trip to Kawagoe happens to be arranged in the summer, it is highly recommended to include the Hikawa Shrine in your itinerary.
In addition to the tai omikuji and furin, the ema tunnel in the shrine grounds is also very unique. The sides are filled with ema, and as you walk through, you can see the wishes written by many people. It may not be a particularly glamorous spot, but it is a corner that has a very Japanese shrine atmosphere.

Kawagoe Attractions 2 | Toki no Kane: The Most Representative Landmark of Kawagoe

Toki no Kane itself does not require a long stay, but it is definitely worth taking photos. The classic angle is from a slightly distant position on the street, capturing the bell tower along with the old streets on both sides. This way, you can photograph the most representative street scene of Kawagoe.
If you are wearing a kimono or yukata while strolling in Kawagoe, the area near the Time Bell is also very suitable for portrait photos.

Kawagoe Attractions 4 | Taisho Romant Yume Dori: Retro Architecture and Hipster Walking Street

Compared to the old streets with traditional architecture around the Toki no Kane, the atmosphere of Taisho Roman Yume Dori is a bit softer. Here, there are many buildings with Taisho era style, retro signs, cafes, and old shops, creating a feeling that is both artistic and nostalgic as you walk through.
If you are starting your day trip in Kawagoe from Hon-Kawagoe Station, it is suitable to first pass through Taisho Roman Yume Dori and then slowly walk towards the Toki no Kane and the Kashi-ya Yokocho. This route is not too roundabout and allows you to naturally feel the change in the atmosphere of Kawagoe's streets.
